Potassium thiocyanate

Colorless monoclinic structure, relative density 1.886, melting point 172.3 ℃, easily soluble in water, and due to a large amount of heat absorption and cooling, also soluble in alcohol and acetone, can be obtained at low temperature hemihydrate crystal (KSCN 0.5H4O), stable at -29.5 ℃ -6.8 ℃, blue when burned to about 430 ℃, but after cooling, it becomes colorless again, such as decomposition when heated to 500 ℃, blood-red ferric thiocyanate is produced in case of ferric salt, but no reaction in case of ferrous salt.

  Potassium thiocyanate

Potassium thiocyanate, commonly known as potassium rosolic acid and potassium roseate, is an inorganic substance with the chemical formula KSCN. It is mainly used to synthesize resins, pesticides and fungicides, mustard oil, thioureas and drugs, and can also be used as a chemical reagent, which is a common indicator of iron ions (Fe3+), and produces blood-red flocculent complexes after being added. It is also used for preparing thiocyanate (thiocyanate) solution, testing iron ions, copper and silver, urine test, tungsten chromogenic agent and indicator of titanium by volumetric method; Can be used as refrigerant and photographic thickener.

  Application of potassium thiocyanate

Used to make thiourea, mustard oil and prepare electroplating solution. Used as refrigerant and steel analytical reagent. It is also used in the production of dyes and drugs. Used as stripping agent and refrigerant in electroplating industry. It is also used in dye industry, photography industry, pesticide and steel analysis. SCN- can coordinate with Fe3+ to form [Fe(SCN)n]3-n, and it can be observed that the solution is blood red, which is often used to test Fe3+ in the solution.

Co2+ reacts with potassium thiocyanate in the solution containing ammonium salt, or directly reacts with ammonium thiocyanate to generate blue coordination compounds. When diluted with water, the blue color fades and turns red, so the reaction needs to be carried out in a concentrated solution to get obvious results. Pentanol (or the mixture of pentanol and ether) was added for extraction, and the pentanol layer was blue. This method is often used to detect Co2+ in solution, and the reaction is very sensitive.
